Small Business Saturday

We are so very excited to have been picked as an ambassador for Small Business Saturday this year.

The campaign is amazing and we’ve been following and supporting it since it began in 2013 in the UK.

The Small Business Saturday Team campaigns for everyone to support small businesses – ideally all year round but particularly in the run up to Christmas. The first Saturday in December – 3rd December this year has been chosen to be “Small Business Saturday”.

We will be highlighted as a local small business alongside 100 other businesses in the run up to the day.Each day on the website (starting from 26th August) a small business will be showcased.

Facts and figures from Small business Saturday:

  • Small Business Saturday is already the UK’s most successful small business campaign. This is the fourth year of the campaign, which last year saw £623m spent with small businesses across the UK on Small Business Saturday, an increase of £119m or 24 per cent on the previous year. The campaign trended at number one in the UK on Twitter on the day with more than 100,000 campaign-related tweets being sent. Over 75% of local councils supported the campaign, giving considerable national reach into local communities.
  • The campaign is a great nationwide promotional and marketing tool for small businesses. It is totally free to participate and any small businesses can get involved – from one-man-bands, through to a high growth office, and from tradesmen to social media gurus. In addition to the big day, the campaign also delivers help and advice alongside opportunities to connect with other small businesses. In short, Small Business Saturday exists to support, inspire and promote small businesses.  “The British public has a great affection for small businesses and we continue to see that grow year on year. Small Business Saturday is an exceptional example of collaboration and co-operation with small businesses teaming up in communities around the UK,” explains Campaign Director Michelle Ovens.
  • “Although the campaign focuses on one day, the goal is to have a lasting impact on small businesses by changing mind-sets, so that people make it their mission to support small businesses all year round. Most people in this country own a small business, work for a small business or know somebody who does, so supporting a small business on Small Business Saturday is absolutely personal.
  • ”Small Business Saturday, which is a grassroots, not-for-profit campaign, was originally founded by American Express in the U.S. in 2010 and it remains the principal supporter ofthe campaign in the UK, as part of its on-going commitment to encourageconsumers to shop small. The campaign also benefits from the backing of leading business organisations including the Federation ofSmall Businesses and Enterprise Nation. The campaign is also supported by PRS For Music, TalkTalk Business, Vistaprint, Post Office and Clear Channel

Quite often, as small independent businesses, it is easy to get lost in the day to day running of the business. There are always deadlines to be met, phonecalls to be made, leads to be followed up.

The big picture can often get lost in the big buzz of business. This is why we feel so strongly about Small Business Saturday. This is really not just about one day. One day is earmarked to highlight small businesses but it is really about ensuring that small businesses have a voice  and presence.

It is about bringing together like minded people who encourage and support each other. It is about creating a strong community feel in the business world.

We were invited to the launch of Small Business Saturday at 10 Downing Street today and WOW!! What an absolute honour to be alongside the other 100 businesses that were chosen to represent Small Business across the UK.  The versatility, the creativity, the integrity and the fabulous personalities were all there in an absolutely amazing setting so steeped in history.

So thank you to the small business saturday team for bringing us together. We’re really looking forward to being part of the Winter Arts Market alongside other local smallbiz100 businesses and celebrating the independence, the uniqueness and the delightfulness of being a small business. Please head along to the Anglican Cathedral if you are in Liverpool to support small businesses or to your local farmers market or to your local high street and show your local small business that you care.

So we are finally out of the chasm of Christmas and New Year – I believe it really is “back to school” for us all now!

2016 was a magical and crazy year for us – we made many new friends both personal and business.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • We took on the lovely Ella as part of the team.
  • We ran our first family workshops at Claremont Farm and also started our workshops at REX Liverpool.
  • We were delighted to be asked to run the Albert Dock Easter Sessions.
  • We ran lots of Hen Parties at the lovely Siren Cafe.
  • We were filmed by the lovely Rachel Rhodes for The Guide Liverpool.
  • We took part in the Queen’s 90th Celebrations in Wallasey Village.
  • We schemed and plotted with Squidges to bring you Creepy Creations at Claremont and were aided and abetted in this by Readnowwritenow and AlrightPetal.
  • We enjoyed the Summer Arts Market with Open Culture and were blown away by the amazing Winter Arts Market at the Anglican Cathedral!
  • We were named as one of the Small Business 100 and were so very honoured to be amongst the other amazing businesses that were chosen.
  • We went to Downing Street and made it on time!!

Phew! What a fab year that was for us and we were so truly thankful for all the support from all of our friends and family along the way.

We have had a break now and had some lovely family and friends time and Christmas and New Year Celebrations do indeed seem a dim and distant memory.

So here we are on the brink of 2017 and hoping that it will be as blessed. We are already hatching plans for Valentines Day and Easter (Not quite making anything for those yet!!)

We have been taking school workshop bookings as well as hen parties and are now in the process of sorting out further workshops for the gifted Workshop Vouchers out there.

Do watch this space for more news – hope this year is good to you too 🙂

Last week we took part in an instagram challenge for #justacard. This was a campaign which highlighted the fact that every tiny purchase makes a difference to small businesses.

The title of the campaign was inspired by a quote from an independent gallery owner after the closure of their gallery.

“If everyone who’d complimented our beautiful gallery  had bought just a card we’d still be open”

We are also involved with the Small Business Saturday campaign which urges all to support local independent businesses and every year chooses 100 small businesses to highlight in the run up to the day itself and is a huge celebration of all that small businesses do.

We’re looking forward to Saturday 1st December when we will be at the Winter Arts Market at Liverpool Cathedral … celebrating and showcasing with over 200 fellow businesses.

Each one has a story to tell and share, so please, over the next few weeks we’d encourage you to support local. By this, we don’t just mean spending money (that would be great though!) … we also mean taking time to listen to the business story, understanding a brand, sharing their story … either through social media or just word of mouth…. share their journey!

Your support, in any way, makes a massive difference.

Thank you

The spirit of a small business

What an amazing weekend we’ve had!

Thank you for coming out and supporting the community of local small businesses. It was so fabulous to see so many gorgeous lovely friendly people at the Open Culture Winter Arts Market and then Baltic Market on Sunday.

And really – it’s not just about the sales…

–  it’s about the young lady whose birthday we helped celebrate years ago. She came along on Sunday as an adult and said how great and memorable it had been;

– it’s about the elderly couple who take the bus to come in and see how we are doing every year as they’ve supported the business since we began;

– it’s about the children’s gorgeous happy little faces as they discover good chocolate for the first time;

– it’s about the couple whose wedding shot glasses we did who come and reminisce about it at our stall! – it’s about the fellow stall holders who become good friends and we all look out for each other;

– it’s about the organisers who put so much hard work in to make each event extra special!

I could really go on for hours but I think you get it … your lovely loyalty and your beautiful stories really touch our hearts. Thank you every one of you… we truly appreciate your love and support for our business.

The spirit of Small Business Saturday was truly captured this weekend!

Lets keep it going throughout the year!
