Chocolat!
What a dream! What magic! I watched the film with images in my head of offering magical chocolate to customers, watching the pleasure on
their faces as they bit into one of my truffles – a wonderful fantasy. A
year later, Chantal Coady published her book “Real Chocolate”. Whilst driving home from work, I listened to her being interviewed on
Radio 4 with interest. I felt excited at the prospect of recipes with Chilli and Chocolate. I
stopped by Borders to buy the book and couldn’t wait to get it home and have a good read. I
couldn’t stop talking about how to taste chocolate! I wanted to find out more! I spent hours looking for chocolate courses offered in
the North West of England with little success. Eventually I found a distance learning course. It was fantastic. I learnt about the history
of chocolate, current processes and techniques, tastes and properties of different chocolates and how to make my own recipe chocolates. It
was amazing. A day after handing my last assignment in I went into labour. A week later my husband and I celebrated the birth of our
gorgeous baby boy and me passing the course with top marks! In
February 2005, I decided to look beyond friends and family. Response to my handmade chocolates had been amazing! Everyone who tried the
chocolates said I should try to sell them. I signed up for a stall at the local farmers market
and made a small selection of my unique recipe truffles. The beginning was slow, but as word got round the truffles sold fast. The
kitchen was no longer big enough – my husband worked day and night to convert our cellar into a chocolate workshop. We had been trying
to think of a name for the business and the conversion gave us the idea of “The Chocolate Cellar” I
now had a good base and the business grew – we offered chocolate tasting parties, wedding favours, custom made chocolates as well as the
fresh handmade truffles and chocolate bars. The truffles were selling well at the markets,
through art galleries, florists and on the internet! I
decided to open a shop in March 2006. We were delighted with the reaction we received from customers on the opening day. The dream had
come true! I really was offering magical chocolate to customers, watching the pleasure on their faces as they bit into one of my truffles
– no longer a fantasy! |
